Elba was allegedly the director's first and only choice for the role.

Following Will Smith’s departure from Suicide Squad 2, British actor Idris Elba is reportedly in talks to replace him as Deadshot.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, sources say Elba met with director James Gunn on March 1, and things went so well that talks have already begun with Warner Bros. as a whole. Elba was allegedly the first and only choice for Gunn and Warner Bros. The studio is reportedly so excited about Gunn’s script that the film is entering its casting stage sooner than anticipated.

The film, which has reportedly been retitled The Suicide Squad, will act as a relaunch of sorts as opposed to a direct sequel. Reports also claim Gunn will mostly be using DC characters that didn’t appear in the first film – Deadshot and Harley Quinn excluded.

It was revealed last week that Smith wouldn’t be returning as Deadshot due to scheduling conflicts. The film will reportedly include Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and will be written and reportedly directed by Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn.
